How it works
What to expect from psychodynamic counselling
A clear, honest guide to the process — from first contact to ongoing sessions.
What is psychodynamic counselling?
Going beneath the surface
Psychodynamic counselling is a talking therapy rooted in the idea that our past experiences — particularly early relationships and formative events — shape how we feel, think, and behave today. Much of this happens outside our conscious awareness.
Unlike some approaches that focus on changing thoughts or behaviours directly, psychodynamic work is interested in understanding the deeper story. Why do certain situations trigger strong reactions? Why do the same patterns keep appearing in relationships? What are we carrying that we haven't yet put into words?
By exploring these questions in a safe, consistent relationship, people often find that longstanding difficulties begin to shift — not because they've been 'fixed', but because they've been understood.
The process
From first contact to ongoing work
Get in touch
Send a brief enquiry via the contact form. I'll respond within a couple of days to arrange a free initial consultation — a short, informal conversation to see whether working together feels right.
Initial consultation
This is a 20-minute call at no charge. We'll talk a little about what's brought you to counselling and you can ask any questions you have. There's no pressure or commitment at this stage.
Beginning sessions
If we both feel it's a good fit, we'll agree a regular weekly time. Sessions are 50 minutes, held online via secure video call. We'll start gently — there's no script to follow and nothing you need to prepare.
Ongoing work
Psychodynamic counselling works best with consistency. Meeting weekly, on the same day and at the same time, allows a real depth of exploration to develop over time. How long we work together is always your choice — some people come for a few months, others for longer.
